The Ecology of the Hill Country—1800s to Present
Jim Stanley is the March speaker for San Saba Bird and Nature Club. Mr. Stanley is a Master Naturalist, author and lecturer on nature, native plants and habitat, land stewardship, rainwater harvesting and conservation. Mr. Stanley’s program will focus on what the Texas Hill Country used to look like, how it has changed, where we are now. Many of you are familiar with his writings from his weekly column Hill Country Naturalist.
Jim Stanley grew up in the High Plains of Texas. After degrees in chemistry, a B.S. and M.S. from Texas Tech and his Ph.D. from Indiana University, and a career as a chemist in both academia and industry, he retired, with his wife Priscilla, to Kerrville in 2000. Jim was in the first class of the Hill Country Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists in 2002, which led to the following 15 years of his studying, learning and eventually teaching about the Hill Country ecology and land stewardship.
He is the author of Hill Country Landowner’s Guide, published by Texas A&M press in 2009, for which he was awarded the Carroll Abbott Memorial Award for writing by the Native Plant Society of Texas. He is also author of A Beginner’s Handbook for Rural Texas Landowners: How to Live in the Country without Spoiling It, and Hill Country Ecology.
Help us welcome Jim Stanley, on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Come join us at the San Saba Civic Center, 1190 S. Thomas Drive, beginning at 2pm. All with an interest are welcome to attend.
